Big Ass Fans introduces a 'smart' ceiling fan

Big Ass Fans has unveiled what it says is the world’s first smart ceiling fan designed with an on-board computer and array of sensors. SenseME technology (www.bigassfans.com/senseme), available exclusively on the Haiku ceiling fan, revolutionizes a home fixture that hadn’t changed for decades, according to Carey Smith, founder and Chief Big Ass of Big Ass Fans.

He says that SenseME knows when you enter or leave a room and turns Haiku on and off automatically. The technology monitors the room’s temperature and humidity, adjusting Haiku’s speed when conditions change. SenseME "learns" your comfort preferences, tailoring those speed adjustments to what you find comfortable.

Haiku with SenseME, which begins shipping later this summer, is the first fan controllable by a smartphone app. You can use the app to set schedules for both the fan and light or select from several control modes. Among them is Gradual Awake, which gently increases the fan’s speed and light for a more pleasant wakeup.

The Haiku starts at US$895 and the SenseME technology is $150.

Anyone afraid that throwing Transformers into the Angry Birds mix would result in a Michael Bay-level of childhood pillaging can rest easy.
