The worldwide tablet grew 11.5% year over year in the third quarter of 2014 (3Q14) with shipments reaching 53.8 million units according to preliminary data from the IDC research group (www.idc.com). Apple remains the number one tablet vendor.

Marked by back-to-school promotions and US appetite for connected tablets, the third quarter also saw shipments grow sequentially by 11.2% compared to 2Q14.

"Not only is the US market one of the largest for tablets, but third quarter results also indicate that this is where the growth is," says Jean Philippe Bouchard, IDC Research Director for tablets. "We saw Verizon continuing to sell connected tablets at a fast pace, a strategy that we believe other carriers will replicate in following quarters. We also saw RCA enter the top 5, impacting the entire US market and worldwide ranking with one large deal linked to back-to-school and channel fill ahead of Black Friday. Those two...

QUAD is a new rack extension synthesizer for Propellerhead Reason

Rob Paper Soundware has announced QUAD, a Rack Extension synthesizer built from the ground up for Propellerhead Reason. Rack Extension is an ever-expandable, freely-routable rack of instruments, effects, and sounds.

"What we face as a developer is having to have a PC version and a Mac version, and if you run them in your regular host, you can crash your host," says Rob Paper. "That’s a real big battle. People, if they use Reason, learn that things are connected. It’s cross-platform; everything works. It’s a major leap forward for Reason, and productions coming out of Reason will sound totally different. Reason remains Reason, but, now, it’s open.”

QUAD has two oscillators (OSC 1 and OSC 2) at its sonic core, each endowed with a selection of classic waveforms (Sine, Triangle, Saw, White Noise, and Pink Noise), together with a SPREAD function (adding multiple oscillators with slightly higher and lower pitch to the main oscillators to fatten up the sound), and a SUB ...

NewerTech announces the Headless Mac video accelerator

NewerTech (www.newertech.com) has announced the US$19.99 Headless Mac Video Accelerator, designed to fix poor graphics performance issues that occur when any Mac with a Mini DisplayPort (including but not limited to Mac mini 2009 and newer models) is used as a remotely accessed headless machine (without a display attached).

When a Mac is operated without a display attached, often as a high-powered, whisper-quiet home or professional server, the GPU [graphical processing unit] stays inactive. This leads to poor performance when the system is accessed remotely. Without an active GPU, the user interface lags, animation stutters, and cursor movement, navigation, and typing all suffer.

The NewerTech Headless Mac Video Accelerator provides a fix that makes the remote experience run smooth again, enabling a headless Mac to behave as if it already had an attached display, according to NewerTech CEO Larry...

U.S. broadband households watch 17.4 hours of non-...

New research from the Parks Associates (www.parksassociates.com) research group shows the average U.S. broadband household now watches more than 17 hours of non-linear video per week, compared to 11.5 hours of linear video.

"Non-linear video accounts for 49% of the video consumed on the TV, and it is already the majority, 60%, of TV video viewed by consumers 18-24," said Barbara Kraus, director of research, Parks Associates. "Growing consumer demand, alongside new OTT service announcements from HBO and CBS, is driving all players in the video ecosystem to add streaming capabilities to their devices."

Parks Associates research shows consumers are also using connected CE for purposes outside video. Nearly 40% of U.S. broadband households that use the smart TV as their primary connected device regularly access and spend at least one hour per week using Facebook on this device.

64% of U.S. broadband households have Internet-...

New data from Parks Associates (www.parksassociates.com) says that 64% of U.S. broadband households have an Internet-connected CE (consumer electronic) device and 55% have an OTT [over-the-top] service subscription. This is an area poised for strong growth following HBO's announcement that it will launch a stand-alone HBO Go service, notes the research group.

"The HBO OTT service announcement should not really be a surprise given the overall trends in the video service space," said Brett Sappington, director, research, Parks Associates. "HBO has been aggressive in the online space for some time, first testing a direct-to-consumer approach in Europe through HBO Nordic, its OTT video service offering. Competition in this space is set to increase massively as pay-TV providers, broadcasters, cable networks, and other content producers introduce new OTT services. In our research reports, we analyze the...

Chromebook shipments increase by 67% quarter-over-...

Chromebook shipments increased by 67% QoQ [quarter-over-quarter] and are projected to double in size YoY [year-over-year], according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

Acer continues to maintain its lead over other vendors in the market, including Samsung, HP, and Dell. The top three leading vendors – Acer, Samsung, and HP – accounted for 74% shipment share during the first half of 2014 and are forecasted to maintain market control through the second half of the year, according to quarterly data from the research group.

"Consumers are hungry for a product that is cost effective but also provides the versatility and functionality of a laptop," says ABI Research Analyst Stephanie Van Vactor. "The growth of the Chromebook market demonstrates a niche that is gaining traction among consumers."

The questionable need of Chromebooks by consumers contributed to the slow start of these devices;...

The dominance of touchscreen user interfaces will reduce over the next five years as more sensors are introduced to mainstream products and entirely new product form-factors emerge, enabling and necessitating new user interfaces like voice, gesture, eye-tracking, and neural, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com.

Gartner: 40% of U.S. employees use personal devices...

Approximately 40% of U.S. consumers who work for large enterprises said they use their personally owned smartphone, desktop or laptop daily for some form of work purposes, according to a recent survey by Gartner, Inc. (www.gartner.com).

The study, which was conducted in June 2014, surveyed more than 4,300 U.S. consumers about their technology usage and attitudes in order to gain a better picture of how devices are used for work and leisure.

"The lines between work and play are becoming more and more blurred as employees choose to 'use their own device' for work purposes whether sanctioned by an employer or not," said Amanda Sabia, principal research analyst at Gartner. "Devices that were once bought purely for personal use are increasingly being used for work and technology vendors and service providers need to respond to this."

The survey studied the use of devices by consumers, whether as a...

Entry-Level, Mid-Range Smartphones Boost On-Cell TFT...

More than 20 million on-cell TFT LCD touch panels shipped globally in 1H’14, after only 4.7 million were shipped in all of 2013, as the technology has been adopted in the expanding entry-level and mid-range smartphones market. By 2018, according to the latest NPD DisplaySearch (www.displaysearch.com) data, shipments of on-cell TFT LCD panels are expected to reach 129 million.

Embedded touch panels of all types, including in-cell and on-cell TFT LCDs, as well as on-cell AMOLED panels, accounted for 20% of all mobile phone displays in 2012, 29% in 2013, and an expected 32% in 2014.

"Overall the total embedded touch panel display market is expected to grow. However, individual manufacturer shipment shares still depend on Apple and Samsung, since they are the biggest customers for in-cell TFT LCDs and on-cell AMOLED panels," says Calvin Hsieh, research director at NPD DisplaySearch. Slow movement of deals leads to 'de-growth'...

According to IDC's Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) "Quarterly Enterprise Storage Tracker, Q2 2014" India's external storage market saw a double digit year-on-year de-growth (in vendor revenue) and stood at US$54.4 million, the lowest market has reached since the second quarter of 2012 (Q2 2012).

However terabytes sold in Q2 2014  saw a double digit year-on-year growth due to decrease in dollar per gigabyte and is allowing the terabyte sold to grow irrespective of the revenue de-growth, says IDC. Q2 2014 witnessed a declining trend majorly due to slow movement of deals and vendor's focus on technologies like compression and de-duplication that is making the traditional storage  more efficient, notes the research group.

The market is expected to revive in the coming quarters due to the positive business sentiment, investment announcements from the government and rising demand from the SMB segment particularly. Growing volume of data is pushing organizations to revisit...

Insurance industry IT managers in the UK plan to put their desktops on "diets" over the next 24 months. Research by IGEL Technology (http://tinyurl.com/pfxatqh), shows that thin and zero client adoption will increase by 19%.

Of the insurance companies recently surveyed, 78% currently run a centralized IT infrastructure.  Eighty percent of these organizations have at least some thin or zero client desktops deployed.

While PCs still dominate the desktop landscape (they're at 42%), thin and zero client deployment has risen to 20%. Other players in the arena are notebooks—23% of users prefer these—and tablets with 19% of the user base. ABI Research: Internet of Things is cybersecurity...

Securing the Internet of Things (IoT) is going to be a considerable challenge in the next decade, not least because the security implications are more varied than for traditional IT settings, according to ABI Research (www.abirsearch.com).

New variables come into play, including safety considerations, consumer privacy, and data protection. Media coverage has hyped the advent of hacked toilets and spammer fridges, but the underlying trend is worrying because it highlights the fact that secure product development is not the norm for connected things.

The IoT is subject to numerous vulnerabilities at all of its core layers: perception, network, and application. The balance between cost and risk often means Things are less likely to employ more complex, resource-intensive security, such as access control and authentication.

"Some of these issues will be addressed at the gateway level or at the...

New data from the Parks Associates (www.parksassociates.com) research group says 37% of U.S. broadband households regularly use transactional services for OTT [over the top] video, such as online video rentals and downloads.

The vast majority of consumers making these a la carte purchases also have a streaming video subscription, emphasizing the potential role of transactional services to supplement subscription OTT. For example, approximately two-thirds of Amazon Instant Video subscribers also rent or purchase titles through the service, and their average expenditures are increasing. By contrast, expenditure on downloads among Netflix subscribers is decreasing.

"Subscription services are the most popular form of OTT video, but a transactional service that offers a wide selection of titles and easy-to-use controls can score with consumers and create new revenues," says Barbara Kraus,...

Ars Technica:

Last week three men filed a class action lawsuit in Northern California District Court alleging that Apple’s 2011 MacBook Pro laptops were defective and that Apple did not take proper steps to compensate customers whose hardware broke.

The lawsuit specifically addresses 15” and 17” MacBook Pros from 2011, which the plaintiffs claim suffered from “random bouts of graphical distortion, system instability, and system failures.” The plaintiffs also assert that the problem is widespread, with an online survey conducted by the plaintiffs receiving over 3,000 responses from 2011 MacBook Pro owners in a single week.

As someone who has one of these affected machines and has already had one logic board failure attributed to it, I’m going to follow this closely.

Following significant media coverage of the issue, Apple has now reversed course on the decision and according to an Apple spokesperson that spoke to TechCrunch, both PCalc and its Notification Center widget will be allowed to remain in the App Store, along with all other apps that contain calculator widgets. The initial decision to remove Pcalc's widget was reportedly the result of a use case that Apple had not anticipated. Because it was not within the guidelines, an App Store reviewer told Thomson the functionality would...

Apple's Lead in Tablet Market Share Shrinks as Consum...

Apple continues to rank among the world's top tablet manufacturers both in customer satisfaction and shipments, according to reports released today by J.D Power and IDC, although the company is showing some signs of weakness as lower-cost competitors gain momentum and consumers look for more innovation in Apple's tablet lineup. Apple fell slightly behind Amazon in J.D. Power's semiannual customer satisfaction survey, while the company's lead in worldwide tablet shipping volume continues to shrink. Worldwide tablet shipments in 3Q14 in millions of units (Source: IDC) According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, Apple remains the global tablet market leader, despite a 12.8 percent decline in quarterly shipments year-over-year...

Apple's CEO is Proud to be Gay, Now Let's Move o...

Cook states in a new Bloomberg report that "I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy." While I think everyone ...

Apple CEO Tim Cook Publicly Comes Out as Gay in Letter Dec...

In a letter written for Bloomberg Businessweek, Apple CEO Tim Cook has publicly come out as gay while declaring his support for equality. Cook, who has typically kept a low profile on his personal life, says that his decision to publicly acknowledge his sexuality was done to "bring comfort to anyone who feels alone" and to "inspire people to insist on their equality." I’ll admit that this wasn’t an easy choice. Privacy remains important to me, and I’d like to hold on to a small amount of it. I’ve made Apple my life’s work, and I will continue to spend virtually all of my waking time focused on being the best CEO I can be. That’s what our employees deserve—and our customers, developers, shareholders, and supplier partners deserve it, too. Part of social progress is understanding that a person is not defined only by one’s sexuality, race, or gender. I’m an engineer, an uncle, a nature...

Apps for Outlook.com—extending the developer oppor...

Today’s post was written by Pretish Abraham, principal program manager lead for the Outlook team.
Yesterday, at Inbox Love, we announced an exciting new opportunity for developers: Apps for Outlook.com. Next spring, Outlook.com will support third-party apps that will allow users to be more productive than ever, and will allow developers to share their app with our 400 million active customers. The best part, you can start building your apps now—for Outlook Web App—and they’ll work with Outlook.com come spring 2015.
So what exactly do we mean by Apps for Outlook.com? Last March, we introduced Office 365 as a platform for developers, and spoke about our new APIs and tools that let developers build solutions directly into Office 365–making people more productive at work, at home, at school, and on the road. This time, we’re extending the... | Read more »

Yosemite Server: Configure Clients In Xsan 4 Envir...

Yosemite brings Xsan 4, which brings a new way to add clients to an Xsan. Xsan Admin is gone. From now on, instead of scanning the network using Xsan Admin. we’ll be adding clients using a Configuration Profile. This is actually a much more similar process to adding Xsan clients to a StorNext environment than it is to adding clients to Metadata Controllers running Xsan 3 and below. But instead of making a fsnameservers file, we’re plugging that information into a profile, which will do that work on the client on our behalf. To make the Xsan configuration profile, we’re going to use Profile Manager.
To get started, open the Profile Manager web interface and click on a device or device group (note, these are scoped to systems so cannot be used with users and user groups). Then click on the Settings tab for the object you’re configuring Xsan for.

New Lync for Mac adds Media Resiliency, Conversati...

Barak Manor is a product manager for the Lync team
I’m pleased to say that we’ve just released our latest update to Lync for Mac, and it is available for download on Microsoft Support. This release adds new two features; Media Resiliency and Conversation History, and support for Apple OS X Yosemite.
Media Resiliency
No network is perfect, of course, and we all want the best possible experience when hiccups happen. This update adds Media Resiliency for peer-to-peer calls and Lync Meetings, which does two important things. First, if a network disconnect occurs, Lync for Mac will now automatically rejoin a meeting or reconnect a peer-to-peer call as long as network connectivity is re-established within 30 seconds.
(Try it for yourself. Setup a Lync video call on your Mac. Quickly disconnect and reconnect your network cable, or disable and re-enable your wireless connection. You’ll see the video... | Read more »

Protecting you against the SSL 3.0 vulnerability

As we announced yesterday, driving innovations in security capabilities of Office 365 is a top priority. We understand that the security of your data is important and we’ll continue to be transparent about our approach. To that end, we wanted to share details around Security Advisory 3009008. This advisory provides guidance related to a vulnerability in Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) 3.0 which could allow information disclosure. This is an industry-wide vulnerability that affects the protocol itself and is not specific to Microsoft’s implementation. To help protect our customers further, we will be disabling fallback to SSL 3.0 in IE, disabling SSL 3.0 by default in IE, and across Microsoft online services, over the coming months.
Starting on December 1, 2014, Office 365 will begin disabling support for... | Read more »

Office 365 Search is now smarter about spreadsheet...

Steve Kraynak is program manager for Excel Spreadsheet Management.
Businesses use spreadsheets for many critical functions, such as financial reporting and investment modeling, and they need to minimize the risks that using these spreadsheets introduce. The need for strong spreadsheet management is emphasized in these stories compiled by the European Spreadsheet Risk Interest Group (EuSpRIG). Office responded to this need by introducing new features in Office 2013 to help manage the use of spreadsheets for important business functions, and now it has enabled a similar capability in Office 365.
Now you can manage spreadsheets in Office 365
One of the tools introduced in Office 2013 is Discovery and Risk Assessment, a server (on-premises) that helps you find spreadsheets in your organization and determine which present the greatest risk, so you can take steps to reduce your risks. It does this by... | Read more »

Julien Pierre is a program manager and Toney Sui is a software engineer with the Office big data team in Beijing, China.
If your company has deployed Office 365 and it has a central monitoring solution that enables you to continually look at the health of your IT services in one unified place—such as a help desk, reporting dashboard or other solution—there’s good news. Developers and independent software vendors (ISV) with a central monitoring solution like this can now use that solution to monitor Office 365 along with your other IT services, using the OData API. This new client library, the Office 365 Reporting Web Service Client Library, is available in .NET and makes it easier to export reporting data.
The library is available on nuget.org.

Tune and optimize performance of your Office 365 c...

We are pleased to announce new resources to help Office 365 customers receive optimal performance when connecting to Office 365. As a software as a service (SaaS) offering, Office 365 has a number of layers between the servers that Microsoft manages and the end user.

Microsoft runs Office 365 in datacenters around the world; these datacenters are connected by a network to over 1,500 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) at over 50 network peering points on the Internet. This network is one of the three largest networks in the world and provides a substantial benefit to Office 365 customers. Between the Microsoft infrastructure and end users there is the public Internet, the customer on-premises network and Internet connection, and important client application configuration steps. The two new content areas we have focused on are:

Video showcases iOS app built with Xojo

Xojo Inc., the company formerly known as Real Software, has posted a video of an iOS app that was built with Xojo. Xojo is an object-oriented, cross-platform software development tool that enables developers to create software for OS X, Windows, Linux, the web and mobile.

The video showcases all the native controls and gives an overview of Xojo's support for building iOS apps. Building native iOS apps with Xojo is the same as building a web or desktop app as you do today. You can view the video at http://tinyurl.com/nvexpk7 .

Developers can use the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of Xojo for free, and will only need to purchase a license once they want to build a distributable version of their application. Licenses are purchased per target platform, including Web, Desktop, Database, Console, and Xojo Pro, which is a bundle license that includes all deployment licenses plus an added...

A look at SkySafari for iOS, Mac OS X and 2012 DA14

This Friday, Feb. 15, a 180,000-ton asteroid with the thrilling name of "2012 DA14" will fly past the Earth. Don't worry, we're not talking a "Deep Impact" scenario. Which is good, right? And you can follow the asteroid using Apple devices.

The 50-meter space rock will come within 17,200 miles of earth -- that's closer than our orbiting geosynchronous communication satellites. Although we don't have to worry about a collision, the passage of 2012 DA14 is a record close approach to the Earth for an object of this size.

Southern Stars has released update to its SkySafari Plus and Pro apps for iOS, Mac OS X, and Android to let you track 2012 DA14. If you want to track the asteroid you'll want the updated apps. Why? Because the Earth's gravity affects the asteroid's orbit so severely, most desktop planetarium programs -- and all other mobile apps -- will completely fail to predict the asteroid's position correctly, says Southern Stars founder Tim DeBenedictis.

MemoryMiner allows anyone to zero in on the stories depicted in their photos by linking them to each other based on people, places and time. While photos are used as the starting point, the goal is always uncovering the backstory.

With MemoryMiner, you can directly record audio or video to capture the backstory of a photo. You can attach documents, web URL's, or other media to add depth and context.
